Anti-war demonstrations are a form of militant lobbying. Even radical direct action and civil disobedience aim to convince power-holders to do something different. This faith in government is misplaced.
There are two sides to this war. One is the war among imperial powers. The other is the war between the global capitalist class and the global working class. Both are heating up.
There are basically two responses to immigration: the racist response calls for closing borders, and the socialist response calls for workers to be as free to move through the world as the goods they produce.
The NATO nations and Russia are all imperial powers. NATO wants to expand into Eastern Europe, and Russia wants to rebuild its empire. All the combatants seek to incorporate Ukraine into their economies at the expense of Ukrainian workers.
Yet another surge of COVID-19 has people wondering if this pandemic will ever end. It cannot end as long as disease is structured into the global chain of production. Until that changes, community lockdowns, vaccines, and travel restrictions can only slow viral spread, giving new variants time to emerge.
Do you feel safe in this world? I don’t. Every morning, I wake up with a sense of dread, thinking, “OMG. I’m still here, and this is still happening.” I am not alone in this.
