A whole other dimension of this criminal process is the way that the Canadian (Un) Employment Insurance system was gutted and re-jigged by Paul Martin, and further distorted by succeeding Conservative juntas to disentitle large sections of the very workers for whom it is invariably a compulsory deduction. At one point, if memory serves, 58 billion dollars of “surplus” funds had been collected.
Perhaps the most objectionable part of this situation is the almost unbelievably harsh and restrictive legislation and case law around “voluntary leaving”, which turns workers into virtual slaves of their bosses.
This is, of course, a Canadian situation, and I imagine that US legislation and EI are worse. But I am not sure. The late spouse of an American friend, Jill Leppert, familiarized me with the Women Infant Child program there which they tired, and failed, to export to Canada because it was better than anything we have here.
